Fifth Grade- Mrs. Self- 5S

2019-2020

Dear Parents or Guardians,

I am delighted to have your child in my class and look forward to a fun year of learning. I believe each student is very important and is capable of learning given a high set of expectations.  I want to provide a fun, encouraging, and safe learning environment for your child in my classroom. Fifth grade is a very exciting year where students learn many new concepts, but also build on previously taught skills, as well as learn about responsibility!

Kids are very important to me, and I believe their education is vital to their success. I also believe parental involvement is crucial in a child’s learning process. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. You can reach me by email at kself@usd365.org , by writing a note in your child’s planner, or by calling the office and leaving a message for me.

I would like to give you an idea of what I expect from your student and what kind of reward/discipline plan we will be using this year.

  1. Classroom Expectations
    1. Always try your best!
    2. Treat others how you would like to be treated (with respect).
    3. Raise your hand to talk.
    4. Follow directions first time given.
    5. Do not talk while the teacher is teaching unless called upon.
    6. Hands, feet, and objects to self.

Behavior: Students will be using an Economy System this year. They will be interviewing for a job they apply for to earn money. Money can be earned in multiple ways which will be discussed in class. Money can also be used to pay various fines if earned, which will also be discussed in class. Daily behavior will also be tracked using an app called Live School. Be sure to download the free app to stay in the loop.

Subjects:

Block Time: All fifth-grade subjects are compartmentalized. Your child will be traveling to the fifth-grade teachers. I will be teaching Science, Mrs. Walter will be teaching Math, and Ms. Carey will be teaching English Language Arts. All core switches are made in the morning before lunch. If appointments need made, please try to make them for the afternoon so students do not get behind in classes.

Planners

Planners are provided for the students to encourage responsibility, increase communication, and to help keep parents informed about their child’s day. Planners should be filled out daily for all classes and signed nightly. I will check them daily and reward students.

Late & Missing Work/Correction Papers

A certain percent (10%) will be deducted from each assignment that is late. Students will NOT be allowed to correct late assignments. If an assignment is missing after 1 week, a 0% will be entered and that assignment may not be turned in for credit. For Science class, participation points cannot be made up either, although a student may be exempt if absent.

Students will be allowed to correct daily papers (except for true or false questions) that they have received a score of below 70%; a new score can be earned up to 70%. Students will have one week to make corrections; after that date, corrections will not be accepted. Corrected papers must have a parent or guardian signature AND be corrected to receive a new score.

** Be sure to check with each teacher about their specific policy regarding corrects.

No Name Papers

Assignments with no names will be thrown away. It is too difficult to decipher which assignment belongs to which student especially with the rotation of classes.

Homework

Students will be assigned homework throughout the week. Homework is typically due the following day after being assigned unless otherwise talked about in class by the teacher. It is your child’s responsibility to know when the due date is.

I am looking forward to a wonderful year with your child watching them grow academically and through maturity. Thank you for trusting me with your child’s education. Again, please contact me if you have any questions or need to discuss something.

                                                                                                                    Thanks,

                                                                                                                    Mrs. Self
